Title: Applications of NV sensing in diamond anvil cells

Abstract: Tuning pressure using diamond anvil cells (DAC) provides an exciting playground for exploring novel condensed phases and understanding important geophysical processes. However, large stress gradients and small sample sizes can constrain the use of conventional probes for materials characterization in these high pressure environments. The Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) color center in diamond presents a promising platform for in situ precision metrology in DACs with high sensitivity and diffraction-limited sub-micron spatial resolution. In this talk, I will detail my graduate work on extending NV based quantum sensing to megabar pressures. Moving beyond proof-of-principle demonstrations, I will describe two applications of this platform in investigating long-standing questions on deep earthquakes and probing superconductivity in recently discovered super-hydride materials. In the former case, we observe a clear connection between deviatoric stress and nano-seismic activity in a common mantle mineral. In the latter case, we demonstrate the first spatially resolved measurement of the Meissner effect above megabar pressures.
